Planting Seeds Tutoring, an Austin, South, and Central Texas-based tutoring company is committed to serving our community through education and empowerment. The most recent example of our community service was our free Math and Financial Literacy Boot Camp at the San Antonio Central Library on Saturday, July 14.
What is Financial Literacy?
The President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy defines personal financial literacy as “the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial well-being.”
Financial literacy encompasses more than being able to reconcile your bank account, compare prices, or make a paycheck last until the next one comes; it also includes skills like long-term vision, planning for the future, and the discipline to execute those plans. A stunning number of American adults lack understanding of basic financial concepts such as the difference between simple and compound
The Importance of Math and Financial Literacy
Did you know: students who save a minimum of $500 for education are 3 times more likely to attend college and 4 times more likely to obtain a college degree? Only 1 in 3 students who come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have a bank account, compared to 70% of their more advantaged peers.
Saving for college requires long-term vision and planning, as well as at least some discretionary income. The act of saving for college, in and of itself, creates a greater likelihood that a student will attend college. According to Forbes, “The US….ranked below average in the percentage of students who reached a baseline level of financial literacy — almost 18% of American students couldn’t perform basic financial literacy tasks.”
According to this study, baseline financial literacy is the ability to recognize the difference between needs and wants, make simple decisions on everyday spending and recognize the purpose of everyday financial documents such as an invoice.
From 1:00 to 3:00 PM, Planting Seeds Tutoring hosted a Math and Financial Literacy Boot Camp for students of all ages at the San Antonio Public Library. Run by our educational staff, there were fun and educational games and activities designed to create conversations and awareness about financial literacy.
The event was well-attended and well-received. According to Planting Seeds Tutoring founder and owner, Chris Jones, “Financial literacy is such a critical component of success for students. While we work with students of all ages, our ultimate goal is for every student to have the ability to succeed and excel in a post-secondary setting, and this is another one of the ways that we can support their growth and success. We hope that this boot camp was the first of many to come!”
