It’s impossible to go to any stores in August without being inundated with Back to School banners, signs, and sales. It can be overwhelming for parents, teachers, and students alike.
According to the National Retail Federation, families will spend $26.5 billion on K-12 back-to-school necessities this summer. That’s an average $669.28 per child, up 5 percent from last year’s $634.78. Elementary school kids cost the least, with high school kids nearing the top of the estimates.
On June 8, Planting Seeds Tutoring participated in a community event in Austin, Texas, to do our part to provide some relief to local families with the cost of their school supplies.
School Supply Lists
Across the state of Texas, school necessities range from Ticonderoga pencils to scientific calculators, which alone can cost upwards of $100. Purchasing school supplies for a family with 2 students can amount to almost $1300 – which exceeds the national average mortgage payment of $1000. For families who have tight budgets, purchasing back to school supplies can be a financial burden. For students from low-income families, finding the resources to purchase school supplies may be impossible.
Breaking the Bank
48% of Texas families with school-aged students live in low-income families. Those students and families receive the same school supply lists as their middle to upper-income peers. Thankfully, there are a number of national nonprofits that are committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to school supplies and backpacks before they kick off a new academic year. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, the Salvation Army, and the Kids in Need Foundation all provide school supplies to students across the country, with the Kids in Need Foundation delivering supplies to students at their home!
Making sure that all students have the same opportunities for a successful start to the school year is also a priority for Planting Seeds Tutoring and on June 8th at the YMCA East Communities in Austin, Texas, that’s exactly what we did.
From 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Planting Seeds Tutoring, an Austin, Dallas, South, and Central Texas-based tutoring company, participated in the Something @ the Park Live Community Event, presented by the Dream Out Loud Experience. We had a table at the event where we handed out free backpacks, school supplies, and resources. We also had prizes to share with visitors to our table!
Planting Seeds Tutoring was thrilled to participate in such a wonderful community event. “It is so important for all students to have a level playing field at the beginning of the school year, “ shares Chris Jones, founder and owner of Planting Seeds Tutoring. “Most families budget for their expenses and often, back to school supplies can place a strain on their monthly budgets. We wanted to be sure that all students and families have access to their needs as they look toward the beginning of the year. We are committed to helping all students and educators succeed, and having the necessary tools to kick off the year is an excellent start! ”
